Homework

Homework at Harris Academy Morden

Students at Harris Academy Morden are expected to complete homework, to develop their skills of independence, enquiry, evaluation and creativity as well as organisation and time-management. Students should expect each of their teachers to set them one piece of homework per week (with the exception of subjects they study fortnightly) so each weeknight they should have 1-2 pieces of work to complete. Students are issued with a planner and are expected to organise their time to ensure they meet deadlines.

Each subject plans a homework strategy for each year group, ensuring that the work set best complements the work being completed in school. Some of the key strategies used are:

  • Memory and recall – where students are given material to revise and memorise, helping to move it from short- to long-term memory
  • Interleaving – where knowledge from previous topics is revisited to help students to switch between topics and ideas
  • Exam preparation – where students revise large amounts of information and/or practice exam technique
  • Research – where students independently find out more about a topic there have/will study, to extend their knowledge
  • Vocabulary – where students define, learn and revisit important key words to improve their language skills
  • Practice – for example solving maths problems independently

A number of subjects use online portals for homework completion (see below). Most other subjects issue half-termly homework booklets so that students can see what they need to complete across the half-term. More recently several subjects have increased the use of MS Teams to enable students to access materials from home. Departments may also issue additional tasks for holidays, particularly if the students are preparing for exams or assessments.

Many subjects offer homework or support clubs that all students are welcome to attend. Some students are targeted to attend RAP Club where they are supported to complete work to help them meet their targets.

Students who work hard and complete their homework will be rewarded with Harris Points. Students who persistently fail to complete their homework will be set detention and expected to catch up the missing work.
