Harris Academies
All Academies in our Federation aim to transform the lives of the students they serve by bringing about rapid improvement in examination results, personal development and aspiration.

Language Learning

The MFL department is at the heart of Harris Academy Morden. Harris Academy serves a diverse community with 33 different countries, languages and cultures being represented. We pride ourselves in embracing and celebrating the diversity of our students and their families.

From September 2014, the MFL department will teach 4 languages across Key Stages 3 and 4: Spanish, Latin, Mandarin and Korean. Latin, Mandarin and Korean are new languages to our department and form part of the extra-curricular / Gifted and Talented provision here at HAMD.

We strongly believe that the study of languages can enrich a person’s character and perspective on life, as it instils an openness to new countries, cultures and people. It also develops the key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and the application of grammar.

Key Stage 3 Language Tuition (per week):

  • Spanish =100 minutes
  • Latin = 120 minutes
  • Mandarin = 100 minutes
  • Korean = 60 minutes

Key Stage 4 Language Tuition (per week):

  • Spanish =200 minutes
  • Latin = 120 minutes
  • Mandarin = 100 minutes
  • Korean = 60 minutes

To support our students further in achieving the highest standard in their GCSE examinations, all students have access to the Rosetta Stone software which offers a fantastic interactive language learning experience in 25 languages! Students are expected to go on Rosetta Stone during independent study at school and at home. Rosetta Stone is proving to have a great impact on the progress of our students. It has also enhanced student motivation and engagement in languages which is amazing to see.

Our teaching and administration staff also has access to Rosetta Stone as we believe everyone within our community should have the opportunity to learn a new language or develop existing skills.

Community Languages (EAL):

There are 33 languages spoken across the Academy with the biggest community being Polish speakers (28%) then Urdu speaker (8%), Portuguese (6%) and Somali (5%).

To recognise the value of bilingualism we offer GCSEs in community languages to our KS4 students. This year a group of EAL students from Years 10 and 11 has taken an additional GCSE exam in their Community Language such as Arabic (3 students), Polish (6 students), Urdu (3 students), Portuguese (2 students), Russian (1 student), and Turkish (2 students).

To improve students’ performance in their GCSE examinations the Academy encourages all the bilingual students, preparing for their GCSE community language exam, to attend the Community Language after school club in The Language Centre, our state of the art language lab, where they can access Rosetta Stone software, complete past exam papers and receive individually tailored language tuition in their first language.
