Introduction to English at Harris Academy Morden

Our curriculum fosters an appreciation and passion for reading, writing, debate and discussion encouraging our pupils to form an opinion and understand the struggles and successes of the world around them. We firmly believe that the English curriculum should develop and challenge pupils’ ideas and perspectives on a wide range of social and cultural concepts.

The English department at HAMD have designed a curriculum with a thematic approach to allow pupils to explore the importance of voices and to learn about the world and communities around them. This introduces pupils to wide-ranging texts that will develop their own sense of self and their understanding of humanity as well as their appreciation of our rich and varied literary heritage.

The English department aims to foster a love of reading, encouraging pupils to read widely and often for pleasure and information, which is why our curriculum includes full texts that can be used as a springboard into other text types. Through studying these texts, reading, writing and oracy skills are taught and developed to prepare pupils for further English study. Our commitment to teaching a diverse and inclusive curriculum means that pupils will be able to develop thoughtful interpretations, supporting in the crafting of their own voice. The English department want to encourage pupils to become self-reflective, building resilient and aspirational learners. The curriculum allows pupils to explore big ideas and key themes across the key stages, allowing for a conceptual approach to English study at HAMD, exposing them to a balance between knowledge and skills with the opportunity to build upon this throughout their learning journey.
