The Governing Body

The Role of Governor

Within England, there are over 300,000 School/Academy Governors, who form the largest volunteer force in the country.

The roles of individual Governors, and subsequently members of a Governing Body, work collectively to perform a strategic role and carry out key functions such as:

  • Discuss and set the aims and objectives for the Academy.
  • Set the required policies for achieving those aims and objectives.
  • Set the required targets for achieving those aims and objectives.
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress that the Academy is making towards it’s set aims and objectives.

Finally the role of role of the Academy Governor is to be a source of challenge and support to the Principal, i.e. a 'critical friend.'

The Governing Body

The Chair of the Academy Governing Body at Harris Academy Greenwich is Mr Tony Bayon
The Clerk to the Governing Body is Mrs Mandy Francis who can be contacted via

The Academy is a member of the Harris Federation. Ultimate responsibility for the Academy rests with the Board of Trustees of the Federation, (Federation governance details and scheme of delegation can be found here), but much of the work of the Board is delegated to the Local Governing Body which is comprised of Governors of the Academy. Some Governors are appointed by the Federation whilst others are elected by parents/guardians of students at the Academy or by staff. The details of the Governors at Harris Academy Morden are shown below.

Chair of Governors - Tony Bayon2_141_sDear Parents and Carers,

Harris Academy Morden aims to provide the highest quality education for each one of our students, within a safe and calm environment that promotes learning and enjoyment. The ethos of the Academy is inclusive and nurturing; catering for diverse learning needs is high on our agenda.

The Governing Body is responsible, with the Principal and Senior Leadership Team, for setting the educational direction of the Academy; outlining the targets to be achieved over time; monitoring progress towards those objectives and targets. We are proud of the journey that the Academy has already been on and are excited for what this academic year will bring.

The Academy has the highest expectations of its students in behaviour, discipline and hard work. We ensure that each individual develops into a responsible adult able to take full advantage of every opportunity. .

Students are offered an education which is innovative, effective and enjoyable, built around a focus on Enterprise and also including opportunities beyond the classroom. Our aim is to prepare them to succeed in their chosen careers, and as citizens of the society in which they will live and work.

As Governors we expect the Academy to be at the heart of the local community, and that its resources and facilities are shared by as many people as possible. We celebrate our existing partnerships and we are excited to forge new ones with local people, organisations and charities.

We look forward to sharing a bright future with you and your child during their time at Harris Academy Morden.

Staff Governor - Lynn Edwards

L_Edwards_SHARPLynn Edwards was nominated by Harris Academy Morden personnel in a ballot to be a Staff Governor in May 2013.

Lynn has worked at our predecessor school from 2005.  As SEND Manager Lynn’s role is vital in supporting students with special educational needs. She also has the responsibility of being Child Protection Designated Officer (CPDO).

Lynn is passionate about the welfare of our pupils and believes that all children are entitled to a safe and fair education regardless of their background. She fully supports the Academy’s ethos in transforming the life chances of our young people by giving them opportunities to develop, improve and aspire.

Lynn models her that you should treat people as you would want to be treated yourself. She strongly believes in team work and clear communication, her motto is “It’s good to talk”.

Parent Governor - Maureen Bailey

maureen highlightedWe are pleased to announce that Mrs Maureen Bailey has been successful in the recent election for the post of Parent Governor at Harris Academy Morden.  Mrs Bailey, who has two daughters at the Academy, is an active member of the local community.

Maureen is a consultant at Inner Strength Consulting, (ISC) where she specialises in supporting Women and Girls. She also supports various organisations with equality issues arising in the workplace, providing coaching, advice and training and development events.

The position of the Parent Governor Representative on the Governing Body is important as they assist in developing strategies for the Academy and represent the views of Parents/Carers. The term of office is for three years or until the child leaves, whichever is the shorter of the two.  If you would like to contact Mrs Bailey regarding any issue please address your correspondence to Mrs Bailey c/o the Academy and we will forward this to her on your behalf.

We are delighted to welcome Mrs Bailey to this role and thank her for her on-going and unwavering support for the Academy.
