Introduction to Art at Harris Academy Morden

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. Harris Academy Morden provides a high-quality art and design education which aims to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they become more able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They also learn how art and design reflects and shapes our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and industry of the UK. The Art department aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

The chronological overview through Key Stage 3 and 4, covers the full National Curriculum for Art and enables students to be taught to develop their creativity and ideas and increase proficiency in their execution. In keeping with the requirements for GCSE Art and Design, students are encouraged to:

  • Engage in the creative process of art, craft and design to develop as effective and independent learners.
  • Develop creative, imaginative and intuitive capabilities when exploring and making images and products.
  • Become confident in taking risks and learn from experience when exploring and experimenting with ideas, processes, materials and techniques.
  • Develop and refine ideas and proposals, personal outcomes or solutions with increasing independence.

The transferable skills the students gain, such as creativity, analysis and problem solving, complement a range of other subjects at KS5 and also future careers.
