Graphic Communication

Introduction to Graphic Communication at Harris Academy Morden

Graphic Communication is defined as the process of designing primarily visual material to convey information, idea, meaning and emotions in response to a given or self-defined brief. Graphic Communication is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject, and as such in lessons at Harris Academy Morden there is a strong focus on solving real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and their client’s needs and values. Students learn how to take risks, develop solutions, and gain knowledge and skills that will encourage them to become resourceful, innovative and capable young adults.

Students undertaking Graphic Communication will explore practical and relevant critical and contextual sources in one or more of the areas below:

  • Advertising
  • Communication Graphics
  • Design for Print
  • Illustration
  • Package Design
  • Signage
  • Typography

Students may explore overlapping areas and a combination of areas. Graphic Communication will allow students to explore and develop their skills in a wide range of both traditional and digital methods. Students' work will mainly be presented digitally allowing them to take their work to interview for further education and apprenticeships, equipping them for adult life. The creative industries are the second largest after finance in the UK, with ample career opportunities.

Cultural projects such as Day of the Dead are taught in KS3 Art Year 8 to develop a wider cultural understanding. Year 9 students are taught a short Graphics project based on a designer, learning how to use Adobe Illustrator, these skills will be developed in KS4. Please review the Art document for further information.
